le mot du moment : esfuerzomeed ✨

Etymology: Portmanteau of esfuerzo (Spanish, 'effort') and omeed (Persian/Farsi, 'hope')

Working Definition(s): Making the consistent effort to remain actively aware of the possibilities of good coming to fruition; Making consistent efforts with a hopeful outlook and/or driven by hope, an active awareness of the possibilities of good coming to fruition, which requires consistent, dedicated effort.

One way educators can practice esfuerzomeed:

  • When learners appear to be struggling to learn a concept, practicing esfuerzomeed can look like consistently making the effort to 1) see yourself as capable of teaching so that they can understand, 2) see them as capable of learning the concept in the ways that make sense to them and 3) check in with them to see how you can better support their understanding. In short, esfuerzomeed looks like never giving up on learning and trying new ways of teaching, never giving up on helping learners learn. Opposed to (subconsciously/unintentionally) labeling learners as 'dumb', 'lazy', 'hopeless', etc., and as a result not trying different ways of teaching to help them learn.

One way learners can practice esfuerzomeed:

  • When you're really struggling to learn a concept, practicing esfuerzomeed can look like consistently making the effort to 1) see yourself as capable of eventually learning the concept in the way that makes sense to you and 2) check in with your instructor or other resources to get support in clarifying your understanding of the concept. In short, esfuerzomeed looks like never giving up on learning. Opposed to (subconsciously/unintentionally) labeling yourself as 'dumb', 'lazy', 'hopeless', etc., and not trying to learn as a result.

In what other ways can we practice esfuerzomeed?

Voici mon secret. Il est très simple : on ne voit bien qu’avec le cœur. L’essentiel est invisible pour les yeux.

(Here is my secret. It is very simple: it is only with the heart that one sees rightly. The essential is invisible to the eyes.)

~ Antoine de Saint-Exupéry
